    The Sale of a Lifetime:

How the Great Bubble Burst of 2017 Can Make You Rich

    By Harry S. Dent, Jr.

“As of 2008, we’re in the economic winter season of another cycle I use: the 80-Year Four Season Economic Cycle. It’s during this season that we clear the decks with a devastating crash and debilitating deflation. The economy and markets shed the excesses created during the preceding economic fall bubble boom season and prepare the soil for new blossoming in innovation and a spring boom…

“After the blustering bull market of 2009-2015, we are now preparing for a shakeout more painful than anything we’ve seen before. We have seven years of unprecedented government stimulus and money creation to thank for stretching this bubble beyond imagination and making the burst more painful than anything we’ve ever experienced… So, the purpose of this book is to protect you from the carnage ahead and allow you to both survive and prosper instead.”

—Harry S. Dent, Jr. in The Sale of a Lifetime

If you haven’t read one of Harry Dent’s previous dozen or so books, including the 2008 New York Times best-seller The Great Crash Ahead or his 2015 best-seller The Demographic Cliff, then this is the time to read his best book yet – The Sale of a Lifetime: How the Great Bubble Burst of 2017 Can Make You Rich.

A Harvard Business School alumnus, Harry has successfully predicted all manners of market trends using his demographic model and by mapping cyclical, seasonal patterns to global markets.

As Americans, we traditionally dive into college, a job, a first house, family, cars, upgrade that house for something larger, prepare for retirement and then exit the workforce to conclude our days modestly spending until the end. On average this is what most Americans (most people) do, in that order, and predictably. Harry calls this the Generational Spending Wave, and it plays a significant role in the economy and the markets.

Harry firmly believes that, had the 2008 recession played out like it should have following the natural ebb and flow, we’d be ready for a major step forward. But central bank interference, unprecedented government stimulus, and money creation has kept the markets and economy from crashing as it should. What Harry’s projections couldn’t account for were the opening of those floodgates of quantitative easing since 2008, and the delay this has caused for the inevitable.

But central banks have done more damage than simply delaying the downturn. They’ve morphed it into a beast that they’re rapidly losing control of. Their efforts have fueled bubbles in everything from real estate to auto loans and despite all evidence to the contrary, and when it goes belly up – and it will – the pain that we’ll feel will be amplified.

The biggest problem, according to Harry as he starts off explaining in The Sale of a Lifetime, is that most people won’t see it coming because we’re naturally bubble blind.

We’re all indoctrinated to accept the status quo. It helps that most of us weren’t around the last time a major economic reboot befell the system so we lack the experience to see the obvious.

But it is possible to chart bubbles and lay a fair estimate of when they’re most likely to up and burst. And identifying bubbles allows investors to plan accordingly and position themselves for the bust and the low cost opportunities left scattered among the financial wreckage of a global financial crisis. The Sale of a Lifetime is the best source for helping explain how!

To hone in on his demographic cycles and where they expand unnaturally, Harry uses the 80-Year Economic Cycle and assigns the four seasons to phases in our economy, starting around the time the U.S. entered WW II. The 1940s through the 1960s gets labeled the spring economic season, 1965 through 1985 the summer season, 1985 through 2005 is fall and starting around 2008 and lasting through about 2022 is our current winter season.

To illustrate the cyclical nature of market bubbles, Harry starts with the Great Tulip Bubble of 1636. It was the first modern type speculation available to investors. Tulip prices skyrocketed 120 times their original value within two years and by the third year; the market collapsed 99.8% to just below where the bubble started.

In this latest work, Harry lays out the litany of economic accidents waiting to happen across the globe, each of which could trigger the next financial collapse. Whatever tinder sends the whole shooting match up in flames, Harry expects the crash to happen no later than next year, with late 2017 seeing the sharpest crash. He expects the Dow will sink as low as 5,500 and 6,000 before this season ends in 2022.

As terrifying as that sounds, the point of Harry’s latest book is to help you prepare yourself and your portfolio for the opportunities available after a solid economic crash.

The final section of the book, Part V, Harry lays it all out in no uncertain terms: How to Get Rich During the Aftershock. Sometimes knowing where not to invest can be as important as where to put your hard-earned cash to work for you and that’s what Harry explains in Sale of a Lifetime. Throughout the book, Harry’s uses historical overlays and corresponding qualifiers, to nail down each spurious possibility for readers to ponder. But even he’s the first to admit that not even Harry Dent, the world famous “cycles guy” can predict with 100% certainty while the markets remain artificially propped up by the Fed’s cheap money and endless stock buybacks.

All that said, one thing is certain above all else: the situation cannot remain unchanged. Bubbles, by their very nature, burst. The bubbles in the global marketplace today will pop, just like they always have. With Harry’s most recent insight and detailed projections, you could do worse for yourself and your family than to pick up a copy of The Sale of a Lifetime and prepare your financial house for the chaos – and opportunities – to come.

    About the Author:

Harry S. Dent, Jr. received his MBA from Harvard Business School and was a successful consultant to Fortune 100 companies at Bain & Company. He realized there was more research to be done in studying economic cycles and focused his time doing that, becoming known as the “demographics guy.” Harry uses the research he developed from decades of hands-on business experience, and the cycles he analyses and hones continuously, to offer readers an easy-to-understand view of the economic future through his Dent Research publications, including Boom & Bust, The Leading Edge, Ahead of the Curve Webinars, Quarterly Economic Outlook Reports, and the free daily e-letter, Economy & Markets, available at

Harry’s book repertoire includes The Great Boom Ahead, published in 1992, where he stood virtually alone in accurately forecasting the unanticipated boom of the 1990s. In 1998 and 1999, he authored two consecutive best sellers: The Roaring 2000s and The Roaring 2000s Investor (Simon & Schuster). In The Next Great Bubble Boom, he offered a comprehensive forecast for the following two decades. In 2008, he wrote The Great Depression Ahead, which he forecast to occur from 2008 to 2013. Then, in The Great Crash Ahead, he outlined how there is nothing the government can ultimately do to prevent the inevitable deflationary period ahead. Harry next wrote his best-selling book, The Demographic Cliff: How to Survive and Prosper During the Great Deflation Ahead, which shows why we’re facing a “great deflation” after so many years of stimulus. With Dent Research, he has also published Spending Waves: The Scientific Key To Predicting Market Behavior for the Next 20 Years (2015), which is an information-packed guide for any serious marketer, business owner or investor. And in 2016, he published the eBook, How to Survive and Thrive During the Great Gold Bust Ahead, in which he finally puts to rest the argument that gold is the savior to all investors. (It’s NOT… avoid gold!)

Harry Dent has also spent much of his career speaking to executives, financial advisors and investors around the world. He’s appeared on “Good Morning America,” PBS, CNBC and CNN/FN. He’s been featured in Barron’s, Investor’s Business Daily, Entrepreneur, Fortune, Success, U.S. News and World Report, Business Week, The Wall Street Journal, American Demographics and Omni.
